Chapter twelve

From Dovesport they traveled down to Adanes, skirting the edges of the Faerielands. Amaria, as they traveled, stared at the trees, almost hazy in a magical fog, in morbid fascination. She was apprehensive, but she could feel the magic and even from this distance it felt overpowering.

It felt intoxicating. For a moment, Amaria wondered what it would be like to have a taste of the faeries’ power. And then, in a breath, that thought was gone. Everyone knew the fae were volatile and these thoughts were deluded ideas of grandeur that would never, and should never, occur.

As Amaria stared out her window, she talked with Theodmon. She was enjoying his company and she found him to be kind, charming, and intelligent.

She felt drawn to his presence.

When they were about a day outside of Adanes, headed to Monsa, Theodmon pulled out a stack of cards from his rucksack. “Do you know how to play?” He shuffled the cards in his hands.

“Depends on the game.” Amaria leaned forward. “Which one are you thinking of?”

Theodmon began to deal out the cards. “Gin rummy.”

Amaria burst into laughter. “Of course I know how to play gin rummy. I thought you were going to say something obscure like spite and malice.”

“You’ve played spite and malice?” Theodmon’s eyebrows rose.

“It’s my father’s favorite game,” Amaria explained, forcing herself to ignore the sudden pang in her chest. “It’s strategic, my father thought it would be a good exercise.”

“Forgive me.” Theodmon inclined his head towards her. “I didn’t mean to insult you.”

“Do you know how to play?”

“Vaguely.” Theodmon blinked rapidly. “It was my father’s favorite game-I’ve not played since….”

Theodmon trailed off, staring outside his window. Amaria noticed that his eyes seemed blank, as if he were no longer mentally in the carriage with her. Allowing him to sit in silence for a few moments, Amaria reached out and squeezed his hands. “Gin rummy it is.”

For hours, they played cards. They played cards throughout the rest of the trip stopping only for food, rest, and sex. Not that Amaria minded. Sex, once a terrifying concept, was now enjoyable, pleasurable even. And she was growing to care about Theodmon.

She had been embarrassed when they arrived at Monsa and the footman inadvertently opened the door to see her licking cum off Theodmon’s cock. While the footman had immediately shut the carriage door and Theodmon assured her nobody would think anything of a married woman acting that way with her husband, Amaria’s face burned. That was a private moment and it had been infringed upon.

“I never want that footman with a carriage I’m in,” she told Theodmon as they ensured they both were dressed.

“He won’t say anything.”

Amaria crossed her arms. “I’m mortified!”

Theodmon held up his hands as if in defeat. “I’ll ensure that after this tour he will never be stationed with any carriage you travel in.” He leaned down and kissed her on the mouth, tugging at her lip with his teeth. “Now, let me show you Monsa. There’s a private lake outside the city that is better than anything you’d find within.
